Bill Mercer and family

EXPERIENCED

Bill served as United States Attorney for Montana from 2001 to 2009 after being nominated by President Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Before that, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for seven years. He also chaired the Montana Board of Crime Control. He has a clear understanding of the public safety challenges facing Billings and the State of Montana. For the last eight years, he has been in the private practice of law at Holland & Hart, LLP, representing clients with a variety of legal issues. These jobs give him a perspective on the way state government functions.

KNOWS CONSTITUENTS’ CONCERNS

Bill has lived in the district for thirty years. He grew up in the district and attended Boulder, Will James, and West High schools. He has been a homeowner in the district since 2001. With this background, he knows the voters’ interests: a job-creating economic climate, minimizing government spending and regulation, keeping taxes low, and ensuring a responsive public sector, including public schools and universities that facilitate optimal achievement for students.

COMMITTED TO BETTER GOVERNMENT, NOT BIGGER GOVERNMENT

A strength of the State Constitution is its requirement that the budget be balanced. This forces the Legislature to make tough choices on what is essential and what is not worthy of additional taxes on individuals and businesses. Bill will be a watchful guardian of taxpayer’s money ensuring that state agencies remain accountable to us.

PREPARED TO SERVE AS A LEGISLATOR

In twenty-five years as a lawyer, Bill has reviewed a number of laws enacted by the Legislature and regulations issued by state agencies to implement them. This history provides him with an awareness of how clear and effective policy is not always achieved.

EDUCATED

Bill has an undergraduate degree from the University of Montana, a graduate degree in public administration from Harvard University, and a law degree from George Mason University. He has used this training in his past public service work and would do so as a legislator.

ENGAGED IN THE COMMUNITY

Bill has been a board member for the University of Montana Foundation, the Boulder-Arrowhead Little League, the Billings Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, and Big Sky Senior Services. These roles have provided him with an important perspective on our community.
